5,514 spectators packed the Quijote Arena this Sunday for the match corresponding to the seventh round of the NEXUS ENERGY ASOBAL League between BM. Ciudad Real and Barça, breaking the attendance record for this season and becoming the duel with the most public in professional competition since 2012, at the Atlético de Madrid-Barça match, with 12,743 fans in the Vistalegre Bullring.
The return of Barça to the Quijote Arena 14 years later, recovering one of the most iconic appointments in the contemporary history of Spanish and international handball, has ousted the attendance figure for the ‘Big Derby’ ASOBAL between Fraikin BM. Granollers and the team of Carlos Ortega this season, with 5,350 attendees. The BM. Caserío Ciudad Real-Barça is, in fact, the sixth match with the highest public attendance in the last 19 years of the NEXUS ENERGY ASOBAL League, and the best figure recorded by the Manchegan track in its ASOBAL history, surpassing its previous record of 5,500 fans who lived the BM. Ciudad Real-Barça from the 2007/2009 campaign, with a local victory by 29-25.
The ASOBAL product on the rise
Since the 2012/2013 season, the figure of 5,000 attendees in two or more matches of the same edition of the NEXUS ENERGY ASOBAL League (Barça Borges-Renovalia Ciudad Real, 6,200; Reale Ademar León-Barça Borge, 5,500; Reale Ademar León-Cuatro Rayas BM. Valladolid, 5,500), a historical context that sizes up the data from the Quijote Arena and outlines the work that ASOBAL is carrying out in collaboration with its clubs.
The product of the elite of Spanish men's handball clubs continues to rise, driven by its process of professionalization, the definition of different projects such as the ASOBAL Legacy League to add and reinforce synergies with partners, entities, fans and media, or work in the development of an increasingly complete and immersive game day experience.
Beyond the record, the seventh round of the NEXUS ENERGY ASOBAL League has nearly filled the Gatañal in the dispute of the Frigoríficos del Morrazo-Dicorpebal Logroño La Rioja and in the seventh edition of the ‘Game of the Day’ broadcast live on Teledeporte between Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda and Horneo EÓN Alicante, with a Santiago Manguán committed to the show. The sustained growth in attendance and in the number of subscribers is transferred to the rest of the clubs, reinforcing the solidity of the ASOBAL project. This joint evolution consolidates the NEXUS ENERGY ASOBAL League as an attractive and sustainable competition, which guarantees its present and projects a future of growth for the entire ecosystem of Spanish handball.
