The main results of the fan perception survey for the 2025/26 season are now known, an initiative that is part of ASOBAL's commitment to maintaining constant dialogue with its community and strengthening the connection between the competition, the clubs, and their supporters, offering an updated snapshot of fan engagement and their relationship with professional handball.
The second edition of the study analyzes fan behavior in aspects such as attendance at arenas, consumption of content and broadcasts, evaluation of the live experience, and handball following habits, as well as other variables related to the community and sustainability. The survey included the participation of 2,600 fans.
The ASOBAL fan profile: Male, average age, and avid handball fan
The profile of the handball fan in ASOBAL remains stable in the 36 to 55 age range, which accounts for 57.5% of respondents. The audience continues to be predominantly male (65%), although the female presence keeps growing to 35%, consolidating a sustained evolution toward greater diversity among fans.
From a sporting perspective, handball reaffirms itself as the most practiced team sport among respondents and ranks third among physical activities overall, only behind individual sports such as hiking or gym workouts. Regarding following the sport, 63.5% declare they regularly follow handball, at levels very close to football (65.2%), while half of the fans state they watch several matches per matchday, confirming broad and transversal consumption of the sporting competition.
Committed and highly loyal fanbase
Loyalty is one of the most notable traits of the fanbase. The live experience is established as the main way to follow their favorite team, with 74.9% of responses, ten points higher than the previous season and in line with the growth in arena attendance. In this regard, 87% of respondents say they frequently attend their team's home matches in the Liga NEXUS ENERGÍA ASOBAL, either regularly or at nearly all games, while 79% are members of their club, reinforcing the high level of connection with the ASOBAL ecosystem.
The fan experience on matchday maintains a positive and stable evaluation compared to the previous season, with an overall satisfactory perception. On the sporting front, three out of four respondents (75.4%) support the introduction of a playoff format to increase excitement in the fight for the Liga NEXUS ENERGÍA ASOBAL title.
Passion is born from the social: intergenerational bond and connection with the territory
The survey also confirms the fundamental role of close environments in building the bond with handball. 30% of respondents discovered handball through a club in their area, another 30% at school or high school, and an additional 30% thanks to the influence of family or friends.
This data connects with another characteristic of the fanbase: 45% of respondents regularly attend the arena accompanied by their family, confirming the social and intergenerational nature with which professional handball is experienced.
The connected community: WhatsApp grows and Instagram leads
In the digital realm, the influence of social networks as a channel for consuming professional handball continues to expand its reach. 51% of participants indicate social networks as their main source of information about the competition. Instagram remains the preferred platform (71%), while the official WhatsApp channel, in its second year of operation, consolidates as the second option after growing ten percentage points.
Regarding content, sports-related formats predominate such as live matches, highlights, and summaries, followed by news and updates from clubs and the competition.
