ASOBAL has announced this Wednesday the All Star of the Plenitude League 2024-2025, composed by Emil Nielsen (Best goalkeeper | Barça), Ángel Fernández (Best left winger | Bathco BM. Torrelavega), Antonio García (Best left back | Fraikin BM. Granollers), Gorka Nieto (Best center | IRUDEK Bidasoa Irun), Dika Mem (Best right back | Barça), Carlos Álvarez (Best right winger | ABANCA Ademar León), Víctor Romero (Best pivot | Fraikin BM. Granollers), Oriol Rey (Best defender | Fraikin BM. Granollers), Pau Guitart (Breakthrough Player | Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda) and Javier Márquez (Best coach | Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda).
Thus, the ideal team of the 40th anniversary season of ASOBAL has been defined after the voting process was closed, divided between the popular phase (40%), the decision of the leaders, technicians and captains of the Plenitude League teams (40%) and the specialized press (20%), making all the actors that make up the spectacle of the elite of Spanish men's handball clubs participate. In this way, a total of six members of the 'Talent School' debut in the All Star of the Plenitude League (Pau Guitart, Víctor Romero, Emil Nielsen, Gorka Nieto, Oriol Rey and Javier Márquez), which also has six clubs represented, the best historical data of the recognition space since it is made up of 10 awards (it already happened in the seasons 15/16 and 17/18).
Fraikin BM. Granollers is the team with the most members of its squad in the last edition of the Plenitude League All Star (4). Barça (2), Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda (2), ABANCA Ademar León (1), IRUDEK Bidasoa Irun (1) and Bathco BM. Torrelavega (1) complete the list. The winners will receive their award once again at the ASOBAL Gala (Monday, June 2, Madrid). The end-of-season event of the Plenitude League will also reveal the MVP of the season. The voting process for its election has started this Wednesday and following the process of each year, with the participation of a representative of the board, the coach and the captain of each ASOBAL club.
The winners, in detail
Emil Nielsen takes the best goalkeeper award for the first time in his third season in ASOBAL after beating Xoan Ledo (23.10%) and Pau Guitart (22.05%). The Dane has signed in the current edition of the domestic competition 161 saves with a 37.62% success rate under the posts, the highest of the course. Antonio García lifts his seventh award for best left back of the year, the fourth in a row (six defending the shirt of Fraikin BM. Granollers and one as a member of ABANCA Ademar León). The white-and-blue captain, in his 17th season in the professional competition, is the top scorer of the current Plenitude League and the 22nd in the historical ranking of ASOBAL (1383 goals). Following the trail of excellence, Dika Mem wins in the right back category (57.69% of the votes) for the sixth time in his career, the second time in a row. The Barça captain, with 873 goals and 230 games in the competition behind him, has surpassed the records of Arthur Pereira (17.40%) and Rodrigo Salinas (12.34%).
Gorka Nieto, for his part, lifts the scepter of best center of the Plenitude League for the first time. The captain of IRUDEK Bidasoa Irun, who has accumulated 78 goals and 46 assists in his sixth season in ASOBAL, has been the first classified in this category ahead of Miguel Malo (26.17%) and Ferran Castillo (18.78%). The corners are signed by Ángel Fernández and Carlos Álvarez. The Cantabrian player has been the winner in the choice of best left winger ahead of Darío Sanz (19.27%) and Xavi Tua (13.48%). This is the fourth time he has achieved this (dressed in the colors of Logroño, in 15/16, 16/17 and 17/18) and the second representative of Bathco BM. Torrelavega in the history of the All Star of the Plenitude League (Álex Mozas, best coach of the 21/22 course).
Carlos Álvarez (38.29%), on the other hand, has surpassed Pablo Urdangarín (33.83%) and Pancho Ahumada (11.33%) to repeat the award for best right winger of last season. The Spanish international from ABANCA Ademar León was the star of the ASOBAL 23/24 Gala after also receiving recognition as top scorer and MVP of the course. Víctor Romero (42.43%) makes his debut in the All Star from the pivot position, with a higher percentage of votes than Esteban Salinas (21.13%) and Álvaro Martínez (19.15%), who complete the podium of the category. The player of Antonio Rama's team is living his best moment in ASOBAL (117) after the first two seasons in the elite (74 goals in 23/24 and nomination for breakthrough player; 15 goals in the year of his debut).
His teammate at the Palau d’Esports de Granollers, Oriol Rey, rises as the best defender of the course, in what is also his first appearance in the All Star of the Plenitude League. It has been the most balanced category, with Rey taking 21.37% of the votes, a percentage slightly higher than that of Márcio Silva (21.15%) and Matheus Da Silva (20.87%). Rey joins his name to emblematic defenders in the history of the Talent School such as Viran Morros, Didier Dinart or Thiagus Petrus.
Pau Guitart enters the All Star as a breakthrough player. The Catalan has made his performance in his debut season in ASOBAL with the colors of Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda (second goalkeeper with more saves) count. He has taken the individual recognition with 30.16% of the votes, with Ferran Castillo (26.26%) and Haitz Gorostidi (18.35%) completing the top 3 of the best classified.
The award to Javi Márquez as the most outstanding coach closes the list of winners. The one from Tubos Aranda Villa de Aranda debuts in the All Star after being the most voted orchestra director (34.43%) ahead of Jacobo Cuétara, second (29.67%), and Antonio Rama, third (17.02%). It is his second season in ASOBAL after the experience in Cisne in the 2022/2023 season. His presence in the ideal team, added to that of Pau Guitart, makes Aranda match its best participation in this section of ASOBAL handball (season 15/16, with Javier Muñoz and Oswaldo dos Santos as protagonists).
