Miguel Malo is not only one of the captains of Bada Huesca who defends, proudly, the shirt of his local team in the elite of handball. The Huesca center combines his passion for handball with his vocation for medicine. Two worlds that coexist thanks to the effort and sacrifice of the first line and that serve as an escape route between them. In ASOBAL we approach the most personal facet of one of the players who is attracting the spotlight in the Plenitude League, emerging as the top assistant in the championship with 102 assists in his personal account despite experiencing a very delicate season at the group level.
Balance between two passions
“Both worlds are marked by teamwork. In handball, you can't win the match alone, nor the 16 players, since the coaching staff and the board also push to achieve the goals, and in the world of medicine it's practically the same, you're there as a doctor, but next to you, you have many fellow doctors, nurses, orderlies, and administrators”.
“It has been a lot of sacrifice, but I think I am passionate about both worlds, both medicine and handball. When you do it with passion, things just happen. It's very rewarding for me, step by step I have been able to achieve the objectives in handball and in medicine and that gives you a lot of motivation to continue. For me it has been positive because, especially in the months of more intense study, handball was an escape route. I just did the MIR and, in the first round, handball was a way to disconnect. And the same with medicine, this season's situation has not been easy, as a handball player you think a lot when things don't work out and, being studying the MIR so intensively, has helped me to leave handball aside and be able to focus on studying”.
“I did the MIR in January and the six months prior to the exam were very intense. I would get up at 7:30, study for an hour and a half, go to the gym with the team, at 11 I would return to the library, eat, rest, train and at 7:30 in the afternoon I would pick up the books again. They have been hard months, very intense, but both worlds helped me to disconnect from each other and bear it better. My goal is to be able to combine my two passions, medicine and handball. It is true that I am going to try to choose a specialty that can have a certain relationship, I am doubting between cardiology and traumatology”.
“We don't have a WhatsApp group with the other doctors in the Plenitude League, but it is true that I have personal contact with many of them. I have always said that, for me, Antonio Bazán is a real role model. Having someone older in front of me who has taken the same steps I have taken helps me a lot. Soon I will start a stage that he has been going through these last years, the MIR residence, so these last months I have had a lot of contact to ask him and he has helped me a lot. I have a great personal relationship and I am very grateful to him”.
The emotional management of Bada Huesca's season
“It's being a complicated season at the collective level, it's the first time I find myself in this situation with the team so low and it's being difficult. You work all week, try to find out what you're failing at and the weekend comes and you don't achieve the goal. The first round, psychologically, was complicated. At the individual level I knew that this season I had to take a step forward, not only statistically, but in the importance in the game. As a central player, I have the obligation to make the team play and that is being my goal”.
“We still have important matches left, especially at home, and I am confident that we can achieve permanence. This situation makes us learn a lot, but it's clear that it's not easy. As a captain, I try to manage it in the best possible way, without putting too much pressure on my teammates, but wanting to get the best out of each one. In this second round, different things are being seen, I think there is time to reverse the situation. We talk a lot about the situation, there is concern and everyone wants to save the team. Many people feel love for the club. The salvation may be more expensive because there are more teams involved, but I think it will be on 20 points. We should not obsess over the points but go game by game”.
