With the close of the 2025/26 season, three full seasons have passed since the start of a new era for ASOBAL, a period in which the competition has consolidated its evolution as the Professional League of Spanish Handball Clubs and has laid the foundations for a new growth model for professional handball in Spain.
Between 2023 and 2026, ASOBAL has driven a structural transformation based on strengthening the competition and its clubs, economic growth, the evolution of the audiovisual product, connection with fans, commercial development, and an increase in sporting level.
A stronger League
The consolidation of ASOBAL as a Professional League has reinforced the structure of Spanish club handball, promoting a model with greater capacity for planning, development, and growth. During this new era, the professional competition has strengthened its strategic areas, increased its resources, and expanded the tools available to clubs. This evolution is also reflected in the progressive development of clubs, with an increase in their economic capacity, allowing them to face sporting and organizational challenges associated with the new professional scenario more solidly.
In this evolution process, ASOBAL has promoted initiatives such as ASOBAL Legacy League (ALL), a pioneering project aimed at supporting the sustainable growth of clubs and strengthening their development capacity. Recognized with the Sustainability Action 2025 award, this tool integrates social, environmental, and economic-governance sustainability indicators and criteria to promote a common vision of progress aligned with the new challenges of modern sport.
The new professional model has also enhanced ASOBAL's appeal for projects linked to major urban centers, expanding the territorial dimension of the competition to new cities such as Alicante and Sevilla, recovering historic venues like Ciudad Real and consolidating the roots of leading clubs in territories with great tradition such as Irún, León, Valladolid, Cuenca, or Barcelona, among others.
A more attractive product
The professionalization of ASOBAL has driven an evolution of the product aimed at expanding its reach and strengthening the bond between the competition and its fans. This progress has resulted in a 33.49% increase in attendance at arenas, with nearly 100,000 more spectators since 2023 (395,780 attendees in the 2025/26 season).
At the same time, the League's audiovisual strategy has contributed to raising consumption of the competition to reach a cumulative audience of 8.3 million viewers in the 2025/26 season, the best record since the start of this era. Within this evolution, the in-house production model developed together with GRUP MEDIAPRO has been recognized by the sector for its technological innovation, while projects like ASOBAL Inside have expanded the way of telling the competition, bringing closer the day-to-day of the championship, its clubs, and its protagonists.
All this is complemented by a digital community of 186,933 followers and an activation strategy that, through in-person and digital experiences such as ASOBAL Fantasy, Reportero ASOBAL, or the Community Space, strengthens the relationship between the competition and those who give meaning to professional handball: its fans.
More value for brands
The growth experienced by ASOBAL in this new era has reinforced its positioning as a valuable platform for brands. Since 2023, the Professional League has strengthened its commercial dimension, expanding collaboration opportunities and consolidating a model of strategic partnerships based on trust, stability, and shared growth, with six strategic partners linked to the project at the close of the 2025/26 season.
This evolution is reflected in the commitment of Nexus Energía, which after its first season as title sponsor has renewed its link with the competition for the next three campaigns; in the continuity of Decathlon as main sponsor and technical supplier of the official ball of the Professional League; and in the solidity of long-standing alliances such as the one maintained with Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, which among other partners contribute to strengthening the development and projection of the professional project.
A competition of higher level
ASOBAL's growth is also reflected on the court, with a competition that has raised its level of demand and competitiveness in recent seasons. In this context, Barça has reinforced its international leadership as the main exponent of the ASOBAL product, consolidating the presence of Spanish handball in the European and world elite. The blaugrana team, current champion and most decorated club in both the EHF Champions League and the IHF Super Globe, has won four of the last six editions of the top continental tournament.
Beyond blaugrana hegemony, the LIGA NEXUS ENERGÍA ASOBAL has shown significant evolution in its internal balance, with greater equality in the fight for European positions, reducing the gap between second and fifth place from 7 points recorded in the 2022/23 season to barely 2 points in the current campaign, and with up to four different runners-up in the last four years. Likewise, the fight for survival has intensified, with a decisive Matchday 30 in recent years to determine direct relegation and/or promotion spots.
This growth is also reflected individually, with greater diversity of players from different ASOBAL clubs in the Spanish national team environment and in the competition's individual recognitions. The professional competition consolidates as a cornerstone of the senior national team, ensuring talent developed from the competitiveness of the ASOBAL brand such as Ian Barrufet, Dani Fernández, Víctor Romero, Javi Fernández, Petar and Djordje Cikusa, or Marcos Fis. The national debut of players like Álvaro Martínez, best pivot of ASOBAL with Dicorpebal Logroño La Rioja, or Artur Parera (Bada Huesca) demonstrates the relevance and level of the demanding framework of each matchday in the professional competition from first to last place.
