ASOBAL is celebrating this upcoming Saturday, May 18th, the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the former Association of Spanish Handball Clubs. Matchday 29 of the Plenitude League, which kicks off this afternoon with the Barça-Bada Huesca match, will be the first stage of the anniversary, under the claim 'Talent School' and with a graphic identity and a story that will last a whole year. The current ASOBAL League will remember the most iconic moments in its history and will pay tribute to the legacy of its athletes from this weekend until 2025, hand in hand with an online initiatives program - with thematic 2.0 spaces - and the weight of the offline plane.
The creation of the 'Hall of Fame' space and the ASOBAL 2023-2024 Gala are the first projects to be born under the umbrella of the anniversary. "We celebrate the talent, commitment and effort of all the athletes who have passed through our history and who have contributed to make the ASOBAL seal an international reference. It is our responsibility to value their legacy, four decades of elite Spanish handball", explains the president of ASOBAL, Servando Revuelta, contextualizing the initiative.
The history of the best national handball
On June 15, 1984, the first Extraordinary General Meeting was held, and the founding Board of Directors of ASOBAL was established, formed by Jaume Rodríguez (C.BM. Granollers) as president, Manuel Muñoz (C.B. Tecnisán), secretary, Beñardo García (C.D. Bidasoa), treasurer, and Francesc Catot (F.C. Barcelona), member. Its founding clubs were C.BM. Granollers, Málaga Handball, C.D. Bidasoa, G.D.Teka, C.B. Tecnisan, S.D. Teucro, FC Barcelona, Beti-Onak, At. de Madrid, C. Naranco, C.D. Cajamadrid, Tenerife 3 de Mayo and BM. Valladolid.
In the 1990-1991 season, the first edition of the 'ASOBAL League' competition was organized. On June 28, 2023, the Superior Sports Council (CSD) ratified the statutes of the ASOBAL League, authorizing its registration as a Professional League in Section I of the State Register of Sports Entities of the CSD. The highest category of Spanish male club handball thus reached the historic qualification of Professional, defined on July 7, 2022 by the CSD, placing it on par with the First and Second Division of men's football, the Women's League and the ACB.
