On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is commemorated on November 25, Spanish sport will mobilize from this Friday through a campaign led by the Superior Council of Sports (CSD) and the State Secretariat for Equality and for the Eradication of Violence against Women. Sports federations, professional leagues, clubs, associations and athletes will convey, through different actions during November 21, 22 and 23, an unequivocal message: “There is no place for violence against women”. ACB, ASOBAL, LALIGA and Liga F will integrate the campaign into their matches this week, underlining the commitment of professional sport to equality and the eradication of gender-based violence.

The Superior Council of Sports (CSD) and the State Secretariat for Equality and for the Eradication of Violence against Women launch this Friday the campaign “Sport against gender violence”, a joint initiative that will mobilize the entire Spanish sports ecosystem on November 21, 22 and 23. After its public presentation last Monday, Spanish sport is now preparing to make visible, on social networks, in broadcasts and in hundreds of competitions and events, an unequivocal message: “There is no place for violence against women”.

Sports federations, professional leagues, clubs, associations and athletes will join this unitary action, which includes the activation in digital environments of the hashtag #Deporte25N along with commemorative images. In competitions of regional and state scope, a minute of silence will be observed and a banner with the slogan “Sport against gender violence” will be displayed. In addition, athletes will wear a purple armband on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is commemorated on November 25.

Professional sport will be the main speaker of this campaign

Professional sport will be one of the great speakers of this action, since acb, ASOBAL, LALIGA and Liga F will integrate the campaign into their matches this week, underlining their commitment to equality and the eradication of gender violence. The president of the CSD, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has stressed that “Spanish sport will once again demonstrate its capacity for unity when it comes to defending essential values”.

“Sport is equality, respect and coexistence and we want it to also be a space free of gender violence”, he added. For her part, the State Secretary for Equality and for the Eradication of Violence against Women, María Guijarro, has insisted on the relevance of this mobilization, because “thousands of young people look at their sports references every day and, therefore, sport is a privileged platform from which a more just and more equitable society can be contributed”. In addition, “gender violence contradicts, in an absolute way, the values of respect, fair play and cooperation that are an essential part of sport”, explained the State Secretary.

Spanish sport, united this 25N

With this campaign, the CSD and the State Secretariat for Equality reinforce their commitment to awareness and prevention, in a year in which 38 women have been murdered by gender violence in Spain, 1,333 since official records exist. “Every gesture counts,” added Rodríguez Uribes, “and the involvement of sport is one more step to say, loud and clear, that gender violence is incompatible with the values we defend”.

The implementation of this campaign seeks to unite all sports agents around a common message, which will allow courts, stadiums and pavilions throughout the country to become spaces committed to the elimination of violence against women.
